The Answer Revealed!

Last week, as the result of an interview question that had me baffled... I passed the following question on to you in the form of a poll:

Of the following, where is the most milk produced?
The choices included New Zealand, United States, India and European Union.

Once I had posted the question, it came to my attention that the question should have been worded - "Which of the following countries produces the most milk?" and that the EU should have been posed as "any of the EU countries."

Either way, my guess was still incorrect!

The answer, in fact, is India... India is the highest milk producing country in the world. While India did recieve more votes than the other choices, those votes still only totaled 50% of the voters. I was sure the answer was the USA... and how wrong I was! USA ranks as the second highest milk producing country in the world.

I have since discovered reports that India produces between 15-20% of the fluid milk in the world, while the majority of it is used for local, rural consumption in either the fluid form or used in other ways in the home. Had the question been worded correctly, the EU countries combined do produce the most milk.

This was a learning experience on all levels! The question came up during my interview for a position in the California Dairy Leaders Program through Western United Dairymen, a local dairy agency. I am thankful that my incorrect answer to this question, no matter how it was posed, did not affect my overall interview and I was accepted into Class XI!
