In the mail this week, we received the latest issue of Progressive Dairyman magazine, with the story about Ted and Hans Johnson, father and son dairymen from Wisconsin.

About 8 years ago, Ted was diagnosed with prostate cancer, detected during an early screening exam. After having his prostate removed, he was declared cancer free and did not have to have any further treatments.

Last year, at 24 years old, Ted's son Hans found a lump of his own. After having one of his testicles removed, tests showed that the cancer was aggressive and may have spread. Hans then entered a regimen of chemotherapy.

After experiencing a cancer scare of my own, I can understand the fear and anxiety that the Johnson family must have experienced.

Thankfully for both Ted and Hans, taking immediate action made all the difference. Both Johnsons have been declared Cancer-Free!

Unfortunately, prostate cancer stories, such as the Johnsons', do not always have a happy ending.

Did you know...
1 in 6 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime

Men who have had a father or brother diagnosed with prostate cancer are 2.5 Times More Likely to be Diagnosed, compared to a person with no family history

A man is 35% More likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer than a woman is to be diagnosed with breast cancer

In 2013, Over 238,000 new cases will be diagnosed and nearly 30,000 men will die from prostate cancer in the US alone

With early Detection and Treatment, Prostate Cancer has a 97% Success Rate!

So what's up with the Mustache?
November is recognized as Men's Health Awareness Month, and in an effort to raise awareness for prostate and testicular cancers, a variety of dairy industry companies and groups have teamed up to form the Movember Dairy Coalition.

Movember Dairy has issued a challenge - a Mustache Challenge. During the month of November, men are encouraged to grow a mustache to create conversation starters and encourage others to get prostate exams.

My darling farmer isn't much of a mustache man, not that he doesn't want to be, he just doesn't have much luck in that department. For the month of November, he's going to give it his all, and grow a 'stache!

Movember isn't only for men, 'Stache it up, Ladies! Visit the Movember Dairy Facebook page and post your Mustache pics and help spread the word.
